Appy Days – My Fitness Pal

Let your phone double up as a health coach with my pick of the top diet, health and fitness apps. This week it’s a focus on My Fitness Pal.

What?

A free food and exercise tracker available in the app store.

Features:

This website and app allows you to input your current weight, ideal weight and time range then creates a daily recommendation of calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat etc for you to follow in order to reach your goal. You can search their massive database of foods and log your daily intake to keep track of what you’re eating, and add new foods if they don’t have what you’re looking for. You can also log any exercise you do and your water consumption to create a comprehensive daily food diary.
Pros:

It’s been found that keeping a food diary is more effective in helping dieters to lose weight. Even if you’re not dieting it’s a great way to monitor your diet and check you’re getting the recommended nutrients every day.

Logging everything you eat may seem tedious but the app is quick and easy to use, plus it’s a good way to identify possible problem food habits.
Cons:

Many of the foods in the database have been added by other users so the information may not always be valid. The creators combat this by having a feature where other users can confirm that the information is correct.

Have you ever used My Fitness Pal or a similar food and exercise tracker? Do you find them beneficial?
