Kick start your New Year weight loss and healthy eating regime now!

It may be a popular New Year’s resolution to eat healthier and lose weight, but why wait until January 1st? Resist the temptation to spend the next four days polishing off the rest of that Christmas pudding and mindlessly chomping on chocolates and you’ll be feeling a lot better as you see in the New Year.

While I’ve taken the opportunity to eat, drink and be merry this Christmas, I feel it’s time to curb the indulgences as my clothes feel a little more snug and I have a body con dress to get into in just four days time!

So how can you combat the signs of Christmas overindulgences before New Year without having to go on a crash diet?

1) Give your liver a helping hand…
Alcohol, refined sugars and excess calories can burden your liver which has to break down the toxins and flush them out your body. A little help comes in the form of hot water with a little squeeze of lemon juice to help alkalinise your body and kick start your digestion in the morning.

2) Breakfast like a King…
We’ve all heard the saying to Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince and dine like a pauper and it really is true. Start the day with a breakfast of slow-releasing carbohydrates with protein and healthy fats, like porridge with skimmed milk/ milk alternative and a teaspoon of ground flaxseed. Swap your usual dinner for lunch time and end the day with something lighter like soup or a salad. This is so you have more opportunity to burn off your calories and don’t go to bed on a full stomach.

3) Move it…
The gym gets a little neglected at this time of year with busy schedules and long days interfering with exercise regimes, but even if you don’t have time to fit in a full gym workout you can still get in some exercise! Try an exercise DVD, a brisk walk or even get on the Wii for a fun way to get all the family moving! Me? I’ll be burning off my chocolates playing my new Zumba Fitness 2 Wii game.

4) Get your five-a-day…
Chances are the only five-a-day you’ve been getting are five variations of chocolate from the selection box! Incorporate two pieces of fruit and at least three portions of vegetables into your meals each day and you’ll feel fuller, get a lot more nutrients and a natural sugar fix without the soaring sugar levels.

Hopefully with the help of these simple diet fixes you can have a happy and healthy start to the New Year, and kick start your New Year’s resolutions…let me know how you get on!
