Eat your way to beautiful skin from within

Are you prone to spots and bad skin? While there are several causes of acne including heredity, bacteria and clogged pores, it can be possible to clear up your skin and control your breakouts through eating the right food. Here are some tips of skin-friendly foods to incorporate into your diet…

 Bye, bye Dairy:

Milk products, even organic, contain cow hormones that are absorbed by your body. These can stimulate your body’s own hormones, leading to oiler skin and clogged pores. Instead try a milk alternative in your cereal and coffee. Before you rush out to grab some soy milk, you may want to read my article about the possible dangers of soy milk first. Instead consider oat milk or coconut milk for their extra health-boosting properties.

 Think Zinc:

Zinc is a natural anti-inflammatory and has been shown to fight acne-causing bacteria. Too much zinc can be toxic so avoid supplements and instead try to increase your intake through diet. Lean red meat (especially beef and lamb), kidney beans, oysters and lentils are great sources.

Clever Carbs:

Swap refined carbs for whole grains

Avoid white carbohydrates like sugar, bread, pasta, white rice and potatoes and swap for small portions of their slow-releasing wholegrain carbohydrates. Eating a high-carb diet can increase the levels of androgens (the ‘male’ hormones that stimulate oil glands) after just one week. Follow a low-GL diet and restrict wholegrain carbohydrates to about a ¼ of your plate at meal times. The rest should be made up of ¼ protein and ½ vegetables for the perfect balanced meal.

With just three easy diet tweaks your skin should start to improve, and your health will too!
