The Calorie + Sugar content of your favourite Festive Drinks

In the lead up to Christmas, many of us will trade in our usual coffee shop drinks for something a little more indulgent with their festive drinks. With sweet treats including salted caramel, gingerbread and amaretto lattes to name but a few, all available in the leading coffee chains, they can be hard to resist.

However these festive drinks can be even more indulgent and calorific than we may first expect. The combination of milk, sugary syrups and cream means that you can end up consuming a whole meal’s worth of calories and your daily limit of sugar. Wise up to the stats of some of your favourite drinks and you will be able to make better choices (and still have room for that mince pie).

Starbucks Festive Drinks:

One of Starbucks’ most popular festive drinks, a tall gingerbread latte with semi skimmed milk packs in nearly 28g sugar and 258 calories – the equivalent to a four finger kit kat and a filter coffee with a dash of milk. Trade it in for a short drink with soy milk and you lose half of the saturated fat and nearly half the sugar. Remove the whipped cream to save another 52 calories.

Hot Chocolate is a tasty indulgence, but with whole milk and extra honeycomb flavouring it contains 50% of your recommended sugar limit and 43% of your saturated fat. You can still enjoy a chocolatey treat though; swap the honeycomb flavour for a standard medium hot chocolate with skimmed milk and you lose 10g sugar and 7g of saturated fat!

Caffe Nero’s amaretto latte definitely sounds good, but with 37.4g sugar in one regular drink it is sweeter than many chocolate bars. Instead try a regular latte with a shot of sugar free for coffee with a hint of flavour, with 30g less sugar and over 100 fewer calories.

If you want to reduce the calorie content of your festive drink the easiest things to do are to ask for sugar free syrups or make it a ‘skinny’ with skimmed or soy milk. You can still enjoy these festive drinks in moderation, just don’t drink them everytime you need your caffeine fix!
