40 different names of hidden sugars in food

Ah sugar, a food by any other name wouldn’t taste as sweet. Or would it? I’ve written in the past about the prevalence of hidden sugars in many foods, but what is surprising is the number of different names food manufacturers call sugar in a bid to disguise it on the ingredients list.

In his new book, Fat Chance: The bitter truth about sugar, Dr Robert Lustig lists the different names that sugar is given on food packaging, with over 40 in total. Some are obvious, others less so – here’s the full list of names of hidden sugars so you can look out for them next time you’re food shopping.
